On August 12, 2018, the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God. It is the fourth of the major feasts of the Armenian Church and the most ancient feast dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary was celebrated in all the Armenian churches of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia with Divine Liturgies and the services of Blessing of Grapes. Festive Divine Liturgies had begun on Saturday in a number of churches in the villages of Akhalkalaki and Ninotsminda. Spiritual Fathers offered holy services to the communities. From the early morning they celebrated Divine Liturgies and offered services of Blessing of Grapes and the harvest of the whole year. On that day, the Armenian faithful of Tbilisi left for the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin) church in Akhtala, Lori Province, Armenia to participate in Divine Liturgy of Oath. Other faithful expressed their love and devotion to the memory of the Holy Virgin Mary with visits to churches and participation in festive Divine Liturgies. From early morning, the churches of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia were crowded. The altars were decorated with various types of the symbol of the day – the grapes and other fruits. And the flow of the people to the church did not stop. They were coming with beautifully decorated baskets and trays to receive blessings for the harvest of the year and ask for the intercession of Our Lord. After the Morning service, the service of Blessing the four corners of the world (Andastan) was offered in churches. The four corners of the world and all peoples were blessed. Afterwards, Divine Liturgy was celebrated everywhere. The celebrant at the Saint George Cathedral in Tbilisi was the Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan. Representatives of the Armenian community in Tbilisi, intellectuals, heads of organizations and many faithful attended the festive Divine Liturgy. During the Divine Liturgy, the celebrant His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan properly preached about the mystery of the day – the mission of the Holy Virgin Mary, the falling asleep of the Holy Mother of God, Her Resurrection and Assumption, highlighted the love and deep respect of the Armenian Church towards the Holy Virgin Mary, urged the faithful continue to live with the light of the Assumption and the Faith of Resurrection. His Grace wished peace, prosperity and progress to Armenia and Georgia, health and well-being to the soldiers of Artsakh who ensure the peace of Artsakh, as well as congratulated attendees, especially mothers and those, whose name is Mary on the occasion of the Feast. At the end of the Divine Liturgy, under the leadership of the Diocesan Primate, at the altar of the church the solemn ceremony of Blessing of Grapes took place, the extract from the Gospel summarizing the mystery of the day was read, afterwards, Nerses the Gracious’ “Blessing of Grapes” Prayer was read. The spiritual servants distributed to the faithful the blessed grapes provided by the Godfather of the Church Cross Yuri Yeremyan. Numerous Armenians of Batumi, as well as guests from Homeland and tourists of different nationalities from other places attended the festive Divine Liturgy celebrated at the Saint Savior (Surb Prkich) church in Batumi. The celebrant at Holy Cross (Surb Khach) church in Akhalkalaki was Rev. Father Tatev Marukyan. Many faithful, pilgrims and campers were present at the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy, sermon and service of Blessing of Grapes brought great joy to the local people. After the Divine Liturgy celebrated on the occasion of the Feast of Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Rev. Father Armash Poghosyan, accompanied by Rev. Father Gevorg Asatryan, the newly appointed priest of Saint Karapet church in Gandza, participated in the opening ceremony of the memorial, blessed it and offered the service of Blessing of Grapes in the village of Khojabek. At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Rev. Father Hakob Sahakyan at the Saint Gregory the Illuminator church in Akhaltsikhe, grapes, brought by the Godfather of the Church Cross Arthur Balasanyan and people were divided into faithful. The service of Blessing of Grapes was offered in the other churches of the Armenian Diocese. On Monday morning the Divine Liturgy and Requiem Service in memory of deceased will be offered at the churches of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia.
