On April 9, 2017, Day of National Unity was celebrated in Georgia. The officials of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, the representatives of the Armenian community in Tbilisi, led by the Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan, visited the memorial to the anti-Soviet peaceful protestors, tragically killed on April 9, 1989, in front of the Parliament Building. The delegation members, presided by the Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, prayed for souls of the victims and on behalf of the Diocese laid wreath at the memorial. 28 years ago, on April 9, 1989, in the center of Tbilisi, in front of the Parliament Building, an anti-Soviet demonstration was dispersed by the Soviet Army, which resulted in 21 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Two years later, on the same day the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia proclaimed sovereignty and independence from the Soviet Union. |
