On August 25, 2018, a festive mood prevailed in the village of Balkho, which includes only 160 families and is located 12 km away from Akhalkalaki, on the southern slopes of the mountain called the Holy Mountain. Residents of the village, young and old people welcomed the Balkho villagers from various places as well as guests arriving from the Republic of Armenia and Russian Federation, who had come to participate in the solemn ceremony of the re-consecration of the Holy Resurrection (Surb Harutyun) church. The church was built in the 19th century, lost its functions during the Soviet era and turned into a warehouse of collective farming and has fallen into a state of neglect in the Post-Soviet period. The abandoned church was renovated thanks to the donations of a worthy son of the village Mesrop Movsisyan, and now the villagers are providing with the opportunity to pray to God and live in accordance with God's commandments. The church was consecrated by the Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan with the participation of Rev. Father Tatev Marukyan, Rev. Father Tadeos Ter Mkrtchyan and Rev. Father Tigran Mkhitaryan. After the Opening of the Doors (Drnbatsek) Service, the Holy Altar, Baptismal Font and 16 columns of the Holy Resurrection church were blessed with Holy Chrism. Members of Georgian Parliament Henzel Mkoyan and Samvel Manukyan, Chairman of Akhalkalaki Municipality Assembly (Sakrebulo) Nairi Iritsyan, members of Akhalkalaki Municipality Assembly, public and state figures and many faithful attended the solemn ceremony. The Pastor of the Saint George church of Arakova and nearby villages Rev. Father Tadeos Ter Mkrtchyan celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in the renovated and re-consecrated church. And the first candles were lit in the church. During the Divine Liturgy, the faithful partook of Confession and took Holy Communion. At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the Diocesan Primate congratulated the local residents on the occasion of the re-consecration of the Holy Resurrection (Surb Harutyun) church, addressed words of appreciation to the family of the benefactor and handed Mesrop Mkrtchyan a Letter of Blessings and gifted an icon. The Divine Liturgy was concluded with the “Protector” Prayer by the Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia. Afterwards, a celebration took place on the occasion of the re-consecration of the Holy Resurrection church in the adjacent area. The students of the “Khrimyan Hayrik” Center in Arakova of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia participated in the event, individual artists from nearby villages took part with their performances. At the end of the festive day, blessing of Matagh (Thanksgiving Animal Sacrifice) took place at the ceremony hall of the village. The Matagh was distributed to the faithful. It should be reminded that in 2004, after the first partial renovation of the church, it was blessed by Deacon Babgen Salbiyan and the temple became one of the acting churches of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia.
