On the initiative of the Youth Department of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, with the Diocese's support and blessings of the Diocesan Primate, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan, from April 1 to 22, 2018, a chess tournament was held among chess players ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old in Tbilisi and various Armenian populated regions of Georgia. The tournament was dedicated to the 100th jubilee of the first Republics of Armenia and Georgia. On April 30, 2018, the final round of the jubilee chess tournament took place in the Calouste Gulbenkian Hall of the “Hayartun” Center at the Armenian Diocese in Georgia. 16 chess players ranged from 13 to 17 years of age, from Tbilisi, Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Ninotsminda, Rustavi, Diliska who get the first, second and third prizes in the local tournament, participated in the final round of the competition. Valeri Badalyan, Director of the Youth Department of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia gave opening remarks. The Diocesan Primate, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan delivered a welcome speech and conveyed his blessings to the attendees. His Grace touched upon the title of the tournament, addressed words of gratitude to the organizers and Clergymen for holding the tournament at a high level and involving local youth. After the Lord's Prayer the competition was launched. According to the computer program (Swiss system), participants played seven rounds with different opponents, the computer chose competitors, thus excluding the factor and role of the organizers. In this way, the winners were revealed in the result of an impartial and exciting game. The winners became David Chakhalyan (the first place) and Vladimir Chakhalyan (the second place) from Akhalkalaki and David Sahakyan from Ninotsminda won the third place. The winners of the competition were awarded by Rev. Father Tatev Marukyan, Pastor of the Surb Khach (Holy Cross) church in Akhalkalaki (Armenian Diocese in Georgia) and nearby villages; Valeri Badalyan, Director of the Youth Department of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia and Nina Seropova, Youth programs coordinator. The first prize winner received a tournament cup and 300 Georgian lari, for the second and third prize winners received medal and 150 and 100 Georgian lari respectively. The process of the final stage, the organization of the competition created a great mood among the participants, initiators and organizers. The guests visited the Tbilisi Pantheon of the Armenian Writers and Public Figures “Khojivank” and Saint Gevorg Cathedral, accompanied by the heads of the Youth Department of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia and Rev. Father Tatev Marukyan and then returned their homes.
