Tbilisi

On July 14, 2015, the second tour of young Armenians in Tbilisi was conducted in Sololaki – a district, where many famous and talented representatives of the Armenian intelligentsia, including writers, poets, scientists, doctors and artists lived and worked during the 19-20 centuries. The participants of the tour visited the Mantashev’s Trading House (now №43 Public School) with its beautiful marble staircase, famous merchant Kalantarov’s building with its overhanging balcony and the house of benefactor Mikael Aramyants.

When visiting the house of the Orbeli brothers, young Armenians learned about their contribution to science; one of the brothers, Hovsep Orbeli helped to save the Hermitage exhibits during the Second World War. They were impressed by the apartments of merchant Mkrtich Mkrtchyan and Armenian great writer and novelist Raffi. Near the apartment of Hovhannes Tumanyan that has been transferred to the Diocese recently, the student Liza Torosyan read passages from poems by the great Armenian poet.

The participants of the tour visited the house built by David Sarajishvili for his wife and first heard about wealthy benefactors Tamamshevs, Bozarjyants and others.

The young Armenians were discovering new places and stories thanks to activist Refik Karapetyan and were proud of their compatriots, who contributed to the construction and beautification of Georgia’s capital.
